Ep#25 | Emotions in Business & Company Cultures
afraid to take the plunge?
Brent Hamachek launched his consulting company, Segueway, in early 2000 after having spent 15 years in the commercial banking industry. Brent works with privately owned companies helping them solve unsolvable problems. He has over 150 client engagements in approximately 70 industries. He works in finance, business development/sales, management, and culture. He also works with companies in all stages of the business life cycle.
Brent is also a professional writer and speaker who has co-authored a best-selling book and has spoken at venues that include universities, academic conferences, national sales meetings, and the United Nations. He speaks on fourteen topics across four different categories ranging from political science to sales.
Brent’s favorite business book is actually a book not specifically written for business. He thinks “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell is the most useful book ever written for the privately owned business operator.
I had fun talking to Brent in this interview. As someone who had been in the banking industry and now in the business world, Brent had his fair share of experiences from both worlds which made him quite a talker ;)
By the way - He did mention that he had a gift for that :)
Brent gave great insights on how emotions can be a driving point in decision making. Specifically, in corporate business, Brent reiterated the importance of the role of a leader. That leaders must be able to connect with his people - share emotions, acknowledge them and be sensitive to their emotions in able to lead them to do rational things.
Are you connecting with your people? Or are you putting them into unconscious boxes?
Great takeaways from Brent:
- We are still putting people in boxes
- Emotions leads us to make decisions that are not well thought
- Be rational in making decisions
- Listen critically BUT thoughtfully
- We are emotional creatures yet have the ability to reason
- In every situation, we must be aware of the real scenario
- Create a fun yet purpose-driven atmosphere in your organization
