Can AI Replace Executive Coaching?

Someone asked me recently,

"Rúna... aren't you making yourself obsolete?"

I smiled.

Not because it was a strange question. Because, if I'm honest, I'd been asking myself the very same question.

For nearly twenty years, I've worked with leaders as an executive and leadership coach. And now here I was, encouraging those same leaders to use AI as part of their reflection.

It Was Never About the Hour

What surprised me wasn't the technology.

It was what I already knew about coaching.

People often imagine that transformation happens during a coaching conversation.

I've always seen it a bit more complicated than that.

The conversation creates awareness - for sure.

However, most often the real, core transformation begins afterwards.

When the meeting is over.

When life starts again.

Stretching the Rubber Band

Over the years I've often pictured coaching like stretching a rubber band.

During a conversation, something shifts.

A leader begins to see a different possibility.

A new perspective.

A different way of responding.

For a moment, their box, their perspective, becomes a little bigger.

Then they return to everyday life.

  • Meetings.

  • Pressure.

  • Difficult conversations.

  • Old habits.

And when we meet again a few weeks later...the rubber band has usually relaxed a little.

Not completely - Just a tiny bit.

Just enough to remind me that awareness needs practice.

That's what changed my thinking about AI.

Not because I suddenly believed AI could replace coaching.

Quite the opposite.

Between Conversations

I began wondering whether it could help leaders keep gently stretching the rubber band between our conversations.

Not by giving advice.

Not by making decisions.

Not by leading.

But by asking one more question.

Holding up one more mirror.

Helping someone notice one more reaction before it became another unconscious pattern.

Trust in the Coach & Trusting AI

The leaders I work with who use BeBBY often tell me something I didn't expect.

At first, they hesitated.

It felt surprisingly personal to share their thoughts with AI.

That made complete sense to me.

I wouldn't expect anyone to immediately share their deepest reflections with either a coach or AI.

Trust isn't built because AI has good answers.

Trust is built the moment we feel safe enough to be honest with ourselves.

But once that trust begins to grow...something else starts to happen.

Reflection is no longer something that only happens during a coaching session.

It becomes something people can choose on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

Five minutes before a difficult conversation.

Or ten minutes after one.

That's when I realised I had become interested in a different question.

Not:

Can AI replace executive coaching?

But:

What happens when leaders no longer have to wait until their next coaching session to reflect?

To me, that's the far more interesting question.

So, can AI replace coaches

I don't believe AI will replace executive or leadership coaches.

If anything...

I think it asks more of us.

It challenges us to become better listeners.

Better question-askers.

Better mirrors.

And it invites leaders to build something that coaching alone could never create.

A habit of reflection.

Perhaps that's the real opportunity.

Not replacing the coaching conversation.

But extending it into everyday life.

BeBBY Definition

The Leader's Mirror™

A reflective partner that helps leaders notice patterns, assumptions and the mental boxes through which they interpret themselves, other people and the world. The Leader's Mirror™ does not replace human judgement. It strengthens reflection, creating greater awareness and more intentional choices.
