Empathy is often described as the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes.
But that is only part of the story.
A leader can understand what someone is experiencing without feeling emotionally connected to it. Another leader may feel everything so deeply that they become overwhelmed. And a third may understand, feel—and then ask:
What would genuinely help?
